Chimamanda Adichie’s Speech After Bagging Honorary Degree In Scotland Is A Must Watch

Renowned Novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was recently honored with an honorary degree at the University of Edinburg, Scotland.

While accepting the award, Adichie gave an insightful speech on writing and feminism. She talked about writing being her first love, and speaking about the things that move her being an added advantage.

She read an excerpt from her new book “Dear Ijeawele, Or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions,” which is a letter she wrote after she was asked by a friend who just birthed a baby how the child could be raised a feminist.

“Teach Chizalum about difference,” Adichie began, reading the fifteenth suggestion. “Make difference ordinary. She must know and understand that people walk different paths in this world, and that as long as those paths do no harm to others, they are valid paths that she must respect,”
