Is Marriage Now A Crime? A Case Study Of Globacom’s Mass Sacking Of 90 Married Women

In the age when women are standing up for themselves and creating a sense of awareness, becoming less of a liability and taking charge of their homes, it is appaling that a company as huge as Globacom can be of the mindest that married women have no place in their organization.

Trending online for days now is the news of One of Africa’s richest man, Mike Adenuga laying off 90 married women in his organization without stating any plausible cause and replacing them with people who are not fit to take their positions.

Aisha Ahmad Makes History As She Is Confirmed CBN Deputy Governor

This is entirely absurd and we only hope that something major is done to compensate these women and soon, too. Most of these women are breadwinners- they meet the needs of their children, and even husbands- they pay fees. Yes, they do!

These women multitask, they rise early to get their jobs done at home and in the workplace. They meet targets, the company sets a goal and they meet that too. So, why lay them off?

Are we gradually reclining into a world where marriage becomes a stigma and where being single guarantees a lot of open doors? Are we now a people who believe that a woman has no value and appeal once she has been joined to a man in marriage?  Do we now think that a married woman is a fruit gone sour? I thought it used to be vice versa?

Now some thoughts keep running through my mind- what happens to that woman whose household depends on her monthly stipend? What happens to that woman whose children wait daily for her paycheck? What happens to dreams hinged on that monthly pay? I guess no one thought about this.

Yesterday, the 22nd of March 2018, Aisha Ahmad was confirmed Deputy Governor of CBN. Why? She does her job well, extremely well at that and guess what- She is married with kids.

As one disgruntled staff who has chosen to remain anonymous said:

“I joined the company a vibrant 22year old, freshly out of school graduate. I have worked with dedication, total commitment and loyalty. I can conveniently say I rose through the ladder being an outstanding staff and got whatever due given to such persons. Not a single one of the several bosses I have worked with can give a negative report about me.

We were replaced with males (some of whom have not earned the positions) single ladies (who have neither earned nor have any knowledge about the job) and newly recruited staff who are by the way poorly paid all in a bid to get rid of us.

How does a marital blessing with the gift of children suddenly become a disability to work? I’m not certain there is anyone that wishes for their child, sister, friend or even herself to be unmarried and not have children. This act is a discrimination against gender and human rights to work.”

Let the government intervene, let something be done for these women immediately. These women are homemakers and they will always be.
