Menstrual Cycle length is the number of days your menstrual cycle lasts. It is not the same as period length, which is the number of days your period lasts.

The day your period starts are considered Cycle Day (CD) 1 — the start of a new menstrual cycle.

The duration of the menstrual cycle varies from person to person and is usually between 26 to 31 days. Ovulation occurs approximately in the middle of the cycle, i.e. duration of the cycle – (minus) 14 days.

Know some of PMS symptoms

Feeling moody or irritable,  Lower backache,  Sore breasts,  Cramps in the lower part of your tummy, Ache along your inner thighs, Breaking out in acne, Headache,  Constipation or diarrhoea,  Feeling bloated,  Changes in appetite and many others are some symptoms you should watch out for.

How to calculate menstrual cycle length

To calculate menstrual cycle length, you count the number of days from day one of your period up to, and including, the day before the next period starts.

The count does not include the first day of the next menstrual period because that is Cycle Day 1 of the next cycle.

EXAMPLE:
Your period starts March 3rd and lasts for 5 days. The next period starts March 27.

Menstrual cycle length Calculation:

Count the number of days from March 3rd to March 26th. The counting includes March 3rd (Cycle Day 1) and also includes March 26th.

The start day of the next period, March 27, is not included as it starts the new cycle.

ANSWER FOR THIS EXAMPLE: Cycle Length = 24 days

Safe period

A week before and a week after the approximate day of ovulation is considered the fertile period. The days apart from this are called the safe periods, where the fertilization does not take place.

If a woman has sexual intercourse during her safe period, then the chances of her getting pregnant are almost non-existent. The chances are almost zero because one has to be very careful calculating the safe period. Any miss calculation will result in fertilization.

You have to note your period for at least 6 months and note the number of days between the starting date and the next period to know your safe period. Then identify your longest and shortest period cycles.
