This term was once used to refer to a wide variety of mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, and acute stress disorder. Although nervous breakdown is no longer considered a medical term, it’s still used by many to describe intense symptoms of stress and an inability to cope with life’s challenges.

Here are a few signs and symptoms

1. Wanting to isolate yourself

People experiencing a nervous breakdown may also withdraw from family, friends, and coworkers. They have no wish to make conversations or engage in meaningless chatter.

2. Panic Attacks

They are also prone to have panic attacks which include chest pain, detachment from reality and self, extreme fear, and difficulty in breathing.  If you experience any of these, it is time to watch it.

3. Having periodic flashbacks

If you have been having flashbacks, particularly of a traumatic event, this suggests undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and it is not something you should joke about.

4. Anxiety

If you experience anxiety with high blood pressure, tense muscles, clammy hands, dizziness, upset stomach, and trembling or shaking, these are sure signs you are on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

5. Mood swings

Suicidal thoughts, extreme mood swings, unhappiness, constant crying or unexplained outbursts are also some important symptoms of a nervous breakdown.
