Fatima Waziri-Azi has resumed office officially as the director-general of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
Recall that Buhari had approved the appointment of Fatima Waziri-Azi as the new DG of NAPTIP on September 8, 2021. Waziri-Azi takes over from Basheer Mohammed, who barely spent six months.
Sharing a photo of her first day at work as the new DG on Monday, September 20, she wrote on LinkedIn:
Here are some things to know about her.
1. She has a Bachelor’s in Law (LLB) from Ahmadu Bello University, a Master’s in Law (LLM) from St. Thomas University School of Law, and a doctorate in judicial science from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
2. She is an associate professor and former departmental head of public law at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) from Feb 2012 to date.
3. She worked as a legal associate at the New York City Administration of Children’s Services, Division of Legal Services, and a legal fellow at Transparency International USA, Washington, D.C.
4. Waziri-Azi formerly worked as the rule of law advisor to the president from November 2018 to September 2021.
5. She is the current editor of the Journal of International Human Rights Law.
6. She is the founder of Safe Haven Foundation, a domestic violence NGO.
7. Waziri-Azi is an expert in the rule of law and an advocate against domestic and sexual-based violence. Her research interests lie in anti-corruption and human rights issues.
