3. Her father’s illiteracy inspired one of her biggest legacies

Despite the inability of Dolly’s father, Robert Lee Parton, to read or write, she credited him with being extremely intelligent and business-savvy.

This led to the creation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995. The organization has since distributed over 300 million free books to children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

4. Her hit song ‘Jolene’ was based on true-life events

Unknown to many, Parton’s 1973 hit song ‘Jolene’ was partially inspired by a true-life event involving a redheaded bank teller who flirted with her husband, Carl Dean. The singer decided to channel it into a masterpiece.

However, the name “Jolene” was actually inspired by another redhead: a young girl she met in the autograph line at one of her concerts who was a fan. She revealed this in an NPR interview in 2008.

5. The world’s first cloned sheep, Dolly the Sheep, was named after her

10. She had over 350 wigs

Parton’s love for wigs, especially the blonde-colored ones, was unmatched. She is said to have had at least 365 wigs for every day of the week. However, there was a reason for that.

Repeatedly bleaching her hair had caused breakage. She admitted that wigs were actually helpful because her hair was so damaged from all of the bleaching; however, wigs allowed her to get the height and volume she wanted without putting her natural hair through the same amount of styling.
