All You Should Know As Nigerian Author Ayobami Adebayo Gets Longlisted For 2023 Booker Prize

Nigerian author, Ayobami Adebayo has been longlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize for her second novel ‘A Spell of Good Things’.

With this feat, She is also the only African on this year’s Booker Prize longlist.

The Booker Prize is a prestigious award for a single work of fiction written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

‘A Spell of Good Things’ was among the top 13 novels longlisted out of 160 works selected across four continents.


According to The Booker Prize, the 13 longlisted books explore universal and topical themes – from deeply moving personal dramas to tragi-comic family sagas; from the effects of climate change to the oppression of minorities; from scientific breakthroughs to competitive sport.

A shortlist of six books out of 13 longlisted books will be announced in September. The winner will be announced at an event at Old Billingsgate, London, on November 26, 2023, and will go home with a cash prize of £50,000.

Adebayo is the fifth Nigerian to be longlisted for the prize after the likes of Chinua Achebe, Ben Okri, Oyinkan Braithwaite, and Chigozie Obioma and will be the second Nigerian winner after Ben Okri if she wins.

Her 2017 debut novel, Stay With Me, won the 9mobile Prize for Literature and the Prix Les Afriques.
