Ayra Starr recently won big at the MOBO Awards by snagging two major awards (Best African Music Act and Best International Music Act).
The 22-year-old also made history as the first woman in 16 years to win the Best African Act, outperforming major competition from fellow Nigerian star Tems and South Africa’s Tyla while she beat the likes of Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Kendrick Lamar to win the Best International Act category.
The 2005 edition took place on Tuesday, 18 February 2025, at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, England. The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin, also known as the MOBOs) is an annual British music award honoring achievements in “music of black origin,” including hip hop, grime, UK Drill, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and African music.
They shine a spotlight on music rooted in Black culture by highlighting the diverse talents emerging from the continent, pushing genres like Afrobeats into the mainstream.
Ayra Starr’s rise in the music industry is a powerful source of inspiration for aspiring female musicians throughout Africa. Her achievements highlight that women can gain significant recognition in historically male-dominated genres. Her victory goes far beyond her success; it’s a beacon of hope for young girls and aspiring female artists across Africa.
Even with the advancements we’ve seen, women in the African music scene still face significant hurdles like gender bias, a lack of resources, and societal expectations. Her recent achievement highlights these inequalities and sparks essential conversations about gender equality in the music industry. However, her recent success could motivate key players in the field to create initiatives that empower female artists, ensuring they have the same opportunities to succeed as their male counterparts.
Her rise from relative anonymity to global recognition in less than four years shows that it’s possible to achieve your dreams, even in the face of obstacles. This recognition can inspire young women to pursue their creative passions, paving the way for a fresh wave of female musicians ready to make their mark and redefine the industry.
