Ego Boyo is an actress, producer, filmmaker, entrepreneur, activist, and philanthropist whose work transcends over three decades.
She has over 30 years of experience and expertise in producing and consulting on film and media content.
Here is a biography about the screen darling of the nineties.
1. Nwakego Boyo (nee Nnamani) was born on September 6, 1968, in Umuahia, Abia State.
2. Her late father, Augustine Nnamani was a former supreme court justice and justice minister. Her mother, Gloria Nnamani was from Barbados.
3. At just ten days old, she was taken to Barbados where she lived with her maternal family until after the war, returning in 1971.
4. Boyo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts from the University of Benin.
5. Her acting career started in the 1990s when she got the lead actress role as ‘Ann Haastrup’ in the popular Nigerian series ‘Checkmate’ produced by Amaka Igwe.
6. She co-produced the 1996 movie ‘Violated’ with Amaka Igwe. This began her journey into film production.
7. She started her own production company, Temple Productions in 1996. The office located at Dolphin Estate in Lagos was set up with state-of-the-art digital equipment in 1998.
8. She has produced award-winning movies like ‘Keeping Faith'(2002), ‘A Hotel Called Memory'(2017), ‘The Ghost And The House of Truth'(2019) and ‘La Femme Anjola'(2021), etc.
9. With a knack for advocacy and women’s rights, Ego Boyo founded Tempio Media Advocacy and Information Foundation, an organization focused on highlighting women’s education and women’s healthcare.
10. She was the Global Rights Ambassador for Global Rights Nigeria; whose work focuses on combating sexual violence against women.
11. She sits on the board of several organizations, including the Lagos Fringe Theatre Festival, Oando Foundation, and the Mirabel Center, Nigeria’s first sexual assault referral center.
12. She is a founding member of Lagos Preparatory School in Ikoyi, a private British curriculum school, and sits on the school board as a non-executive director.
13. In 2017, Boyo became the 60th President of the International Women’s Society (IWS), an independent, non-political, non-governmental, and non-profit organization founded in 1957 in Lagos by a group of women.
