The much anticipated tell-all interview by Oprah Winfrey with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle was released on Sunday, March 8.

The exclusive interview was the first the couple was giving since they stepped away from royal duties in 2020.

The interview opened a can of worms which has received uproar on social media as the couple detailed their royal struggles.

Here are highlights from the interview.

1.On Allegations That She Made Kate Middleton Cry

The tabloids had accused Meghan of making her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton cry days before her wedding.

In a bid to address the issue, Oprah asked her what happened but Meghan answered, “No, the reverse happened.”

Meghan said that the issue pertained to dresses for the flower girls at the wedding.

In her words:

“A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining to … flower girl dresses. And it made me cry,” she said. “And it really hurt my feelings, and I thought in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, it didn’t make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else is doing, which was trying to be supportive knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot.”

The duchess added that she never wanted the story to receive any press attention. Though the issue between the duchesses was resolved, the most hurtful part of the situation, according to Meghan, was how the media reacted by reversing the blame.

“I would have never wanted that to come out about her ever, even though it had happened,” Meghan said. “I protected that from ever being out in the world.”

2.Her Struggle With Mental Health

Meghan spoke on her struggles with her mental health as a royal which was impacted by negative press.

The 39-year-old revealed that she was having suicidal thoughts and was also thinking of harming herself and she needed to get help. She also said she was ashamed to tell her husband, Harry.

“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”

She admitted going to the Human Resources at the palace but was told she couldn’t get help as it wasn’t good for the organization.

The HR’s reply was ‘My heart goes out to you because I see how bad it is, but there’s nothing we can do to protect you because you’re not a paid employee of the institution.’

There was a back and forth of emails and nothing was ever done according to Meghan and the solution was to step back from their royal positions and move to the US.

3.On Racism And Her Son, Archie’s Skin Colour

Meghan spoke on racism while she was pregnant and how her unborn son’s supposed skin colour was a source of concern

In her words:

“In those months, when I was pregnant, all around this same time, we had in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he won’t be given a title…and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin will be when he’s born,”.

“That was relayed to me from Harry, that was from conversations that family had with him. It was really hard to see those as compartmentalized conversations.”

According to Meghan, the palace also informed the couple that Archie, the first mixed-race great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II would not be provided private security from the palace.

4. Tyler Perry’s Role

In the interview, it was revealed by the couple that Tyler Perry offered Meghan, Harry, and their son, Archie his house to stay and full security detail when they first moved to the US.

This generosity from the actor and movie producer has sparked reactions online.

5.  Their Baby Gender Reveal

On a sweet note, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed they are expecting a girl during the summer.

“To have any child any one or two would be amazing but to have a boy then a girl … what else can you ask for?” Harry said.

“We have a family,” he continued.

A spokesperson for the couple originally announced the pregnancy of their second child on Feb. 14.
