Everything You Should Know About Hormonal Imbalance: Signs & Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Are you constantly tired and prone to mood swings? These may be signs and symptoms that indicate that you have hormonal imbalance.

A shift in hormone levels in women can create different reactions. It is therefore important if some symptoms persist longer than necessary.

Sometimes it can be very difficult to tell if a person has a hormonal imbalance since the symptoms are so many. Carrying out a test is always the simplest way to know for sure.

How does hormonal imbalance occur?

Hormone levels in the body can change from time to time but when hormonal imbalance occurs, it means that for a time your body has produced too much or too little of a certain hormone, usually estrogen and progesterone, leading to several symptoms, which will be mentioned later.

Causes of hormonal imbalance

Hormonal imbalance can occur naturally at various stages of a woman’s life, such as puberty, menopause, and perimenopause. Other causative factors include

  • Toxins
  • An unbalanced lifestyle
  • Birth control pills
  • Some cosmetics that contain estrogen

What are the symptoms of hormonal imbalance?

As we mentioned earlier, there are several symptoms linked to hormonal imbalance. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Hot flashes
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Decreased fertility
  • Depression
  • Excess facial or body hair
  • Irregular periods
  • Irritability
  • Poor concentration
  • Loss of scalp hair
  • Low libido
  • Heavy or painful periods
  • Memory lapses
  • Bone loss
  • Mood swings
  • Nervousness
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Bloating
  • Tender or fibrocystic breasts
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Vagina dryness
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of muscle mass

So if you find out that you have more than 1/3 of the symptoms occurring in your body at the same time, then you are advised to see your doctor.

Treatment

Usually, doctors would prescribe Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) but it has become more evident that this is not in the favour of the patient. Another course of treatment is the use of anti-conceptive pills whose research has shown that they only make a mess of an already messy situation.

So, health practitioners advise that you address your diet first and then your lifestyle. The right diet and lifestyle can help stabilize your symptoms and eventually sort out hormonal imbalances.
