To some, getting a high score in IELTS seems like a herculean task. However, to get a high score on the first attempt, which is achievable, preparation and practice are key.
Here are some tips to help you.
1. Start preparing before you register for the test
The mistake some candidates make is to go with the mindset that they can just register, take the test, and pass without preparation.
Once you know you want to take the test, start your preparation. Try to be consistent and monitor your progress.
2. Practise your English skills in the four ways
You will be tested in these 4 parts (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing), so it’s best that you have an idea of how to answer questions under each part. Speaking and writing turn out to be a challenge for most candidates, so make sure you practice them more. Watch online test videos and documentaries and English shows, read grammar books and articles, do more writing, and take every opportunity to speak.
3. Improve your vocabulary
Your vocabulary will be tested, especially during speaking and writing. Knowing the basic vocabulary for IELTS will help you in these parts of the test. Aim to learn at least 10 new words from different subject areas every day.
4. Join a class/group
If you can afford it, you can join a physical class with a trained IELTS tutor to gain more knowledge on how to pass the test. Here, you can interact and practice with other prospective candidates and also ask real-time questions, which will improve your skills.
5. Take several practice tests
Towards the end of your IELTS preparation, start practicing with full-length tests under realistic conditions for several weeks before the test date. Sites like IELTSLiz, IELTSBuddy, IELTSAdvantage are examples of good IELTS resources.
6. Learn the exam format
There are instructions under each section on how to answer the questions, as each section is different. For instance, in some reading tasks, you may be required to answer in your own words, while others will want you to use words from the text in your answer.
For listening, the format is usually ‘Write no more than one word and/or a number for each answer.’ Make sure you read the instructions thoroughly before answering.

Be sure you attempt all the sections despite the limited time you have, as this will help boost your score.
You are to complete the 40 questions in the reading test and transfer your answers to the answer sheet within 60 minutes. Practice completing Writing Task 1 in 15 minutes and Writing Task 2 in 35 minutes. Be sure to leave 5 minutes for each task to check your work for errors in grammar and vocabulary and to ensure that you have answered the question appropriately.
