This Student Was Accepted Into 31 Colleges With Nearly $1Million in Scholarship Offers

Kayla Willis, a senior at Westlake High School in Atlanta, got into 31 colleges and was offered almost $1 million in scholarships after applying to over 40 schools, all without ever paying costly application fees.

“My goal was to have options,” she told Fox 5. “I didn’t want to limit myself. I also asked the question, how can I go to school for free?”

After a tweet showing off all the schools Kayla had been accepted to went viral, she’s trying to use her story — which Essence called a case of black girl magic — to let other people know that they can have the same success she did.

“Someone said ‘the whole world needs to know how great you are’ so here we go,” she said in the Twitter post.

Willis told Essence it was her dad that inspired her to do it.

She initially had concerns about the application process, since she considered her SAT score of 1160 to be average, but she also maintained a 3.95 GPA.

“I wanted to inspire people and show them that you can actually dream big and get to where you want to go,” Willis told Essence.

The photo showed potential scholarship offers, too, already adding up to more than $900,000, WXIA-TV reported, including an $80,000 scholarship offer from Xavier University and a $37,400 scholarship offer from Howard University.

But she’s already accepted a full-ride scholarship at Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville, Tennessee, with plans to major in international business and Spanish, according to Essence.

She also took the extra step of asking colleges to waive the application fees, which can add up quickly, and applied to colleges that did. She only paid postage for her applications.
