Okonjo-Iweala Named On Time’s 100 Most Influential People List Of 2021
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has been named in Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people for 2021.
She was named alongside world leaders like United States President, Joe Biden, and Chinese President, Xi Jinping, in Time’s September 15 publication.
Time Magazine’s annual list of 100 most influential people in the world recognises “people whose ideas, example, talent, or discoveries transform the world we live in”.
The list of influential figures cut across icons, pioneers, titans, artists, leaders, and innovators.
Okonjo-Iweala made history in March when she became thefirst woman and first African to lead the WTO in March.
Speaking on Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, said the former Nigerian minister of finance “knows how to get things done”, and praised her work at the helm of affairs at WTO.
They applauded her role in campaigning for equitable vaccine access across the world.
“Our conversations with her have been as informative as they are energising.
“This is partly because, despite the challenges, she knows how to get things done—even between those who don’t always agree—and does so with grace and a smile that warms the coldest of rooms,” the Duke and Duchess wrote.
