FabWoman remembers the late Onyeka Onwenu as we present some of her greatest songs
The death of legendary singer, Onyeka Onwenu brought a wave of nostalgia across the world as it got people reminiscing about her evergreen songs.
Onwenu died on Tuesday, July 30 after reportedly collapsing while performing at Stella Okoli’s 80th birthday. Known for her soul-lifting and powerful vocals, Onwenu whose singing career spanned over 3 decades brought a blend of pop and traditional sounds into every song she released.
Her sudden death left many reminiscing on some of her greatest songs and classics.
Let’s take you down memory lane with some of the evergreen songs from Onyeka Onwenu.
1. One Love
You can’t talk about Onyeka Onwenu without mentioning ‘One Love’. Released in 1986, One Love which signifies peace and unity is unarguably one of Onyeka Onwenu’s most popular songs.
2. Dancing In The Sun
From the 1988 ‘Dancing in the Sun’ album, the Afrocentric song celebrates positivity, hope, and resilience. It was dedicated to Winnie Mandela. Onyeka also performed the song live when Nelson Mandela and Winnie visited Nigeria following his release from prison in 1990.
3. Wait For Me
This duet with another legend, King Sunny Ade released in 1989 remains the favourite of many till date. The synergy and mix between the icons in ‘Wait For Me’ is unforgettable. Because of its focus on family planning, it will later be endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria.
4. Iyogogo
“Iyogogo,” a vibrant highlife single released in the mid-1980s takes listeners on a musical journey through the unpredictable nature of love. Her powerful vocals weave through the song, painting a vivid picture of a love that swings between joyful highs and tearful lows.
It will later be remixed by the Psqare duo in their hit, Bank Alert.
5. You And I
The classic romantic released in 1991 is still remembered and is a fan favourite. It was adapted as a soundtrack for Stanley Okorie for the 2001 Nollywood blockbuster ‘Conspiracy’, which featured Onyeka and Nollywood legend Nkem Owoh.
6. Bia Nulu
Released in 1986, Bia Nulu which translates to ‘Come and Listen’ is the perfect blend of traditional Igbo sounds and contemporary music. The song urges listeners to come together and listen to the wisdom of the elders.
7. Alleluya
Alleluya which was released in the early 1990’s is a message of joy and gratitude. It became an instant hit and would later become a staple sound at religious gatherings and events.
8. Peace Song
The famous Peace song released in the late 1980s calls for peace and harmony in Nigeria. Its powerful chorus ‘Let there be peace in our hearts, Peace in our homes’ became a popular anthem widely used during periods of protest and conflict in the country.
