As the world continues to mourn the death of the queen of country music, Dolly Parton, at age 80, we remember her life, including her songs, her impact, and her legacy.
Parton passed away on Tuesday, August 26, in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones after a brief bout with cancer, representatives said in a statement on Tuesday.
In this post, we take a look at some of the most interesting and unusual facts about the late icon.
1. She came from a very poor background

Born January 19, 1946, in rural Tennessee, Dolly Rebeca Parton was the fourth of 12 children. Her family was extremely poor, and they lived in a two-room cabin. She began performing publicly while still a child and eventually moved to Nashville to pursue music.
2. She wrote her first song at age six, while her first single was at age 13
She wrote her first song at the age of six, titled ‘Little Tiny Tasseltop,’ based on a doll her mother made from a corncob.
In April 1959, her debut single, “Puppy Love,” which marked the start of her music career, was released on Goldband Records by Dolly Parton at age 13.
3. Her father’s illiteracy inspired one of her biggest legacies
Despite the inability of Dolly’s father, Robert Lee Parton, to read or write, she credited him with being extremely intelligent and business-savvy.

This led to the creation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995. The organization has since distributed over 300 million free books to children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.
4. Her hit song ‘Jolene’ was based on true-life events
Unknown to many, Parton’s 1973 hit song ‘Jolene’ was partially inspired by a true-life event involving a redheaded bank teller who flirted with her husband, Carl Dean. The singer decided to channel it into a masterpiece.
However, the name “Jolene” was actually inspired by another redhead: a young girl she met in the autograph line at one of her concerts who was a fan. She revealed this in an NPR interview in 2008.
5. The world’s first cloned sheep, Dolly the Sheep, was named after her
6. She refused Elvis Presley’s cover request for “I Will Always Love You.”

When Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” hit number 1 on the charts in 1974, she was approached about allowing Elvis Presley to record a cover of the song. She was excited about the possibility, but Elvis’ management wanted half of the publishing rights, which she refused.
It ultimately proved a great decision because Whitney Houston’s later recording of the song in 1992 as a soundtrack for Bodyguard generated enormous royalties for Parton.
7. She plays numerous instruments
Parton is not just a singer but also a multi-instrumentalist who could play over 20 instruments,, including the piano, guitar, harmonica, banjo, saxophone, violin, dulcimer, autoharp, fiddle, etc.
8. She once lost a Dolly Parton look-alike contest
Dolly deliberately entered a drag-queen/Dolly Parton lookalike competition in Boston, believing she could easily win because of her famous appearance. Instead, the drag queens outdid her. She reportedly received only a small share of the applause compared with the winner.
9. She and her best friend, Judy Ogle, have been close since childhood

Dolly had a lifelong friendship with Judy Ogle for over six decades. They met as children and remained close for Parton’s entire life, making Ogle one of the people who knew Dolly long before she became famous.
10. She had over 350 wigs
Parton’s love for wigs, especially the blonde-colored ones, was unmatched. She is said to have had at least 365 wigs for every day of the week. However, there was a reason for that.
Repeatedly bleaching her hair had caused breakage. She admitted that wigs were actually helpful because her hair was so damaged from all of the bleaching; however, wigs allowed her to get the height and volume she wanted without putting her natural hair through the same amount of styling.
11. She held 11 Guinness World Records

In 2025, Parton was named a Guinness World Records icon for holding 11 record-breaking titles.
Her record titles include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist.
She was also the first country singer to be nominated for the EGOT—an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
12. She was sleeping in her makeup for this unusual reason
In an interview in 2023, she revealed she started sleeping in her full face of makeup every night since the 1980s.
Parton said, “I started sleeping with my makeup on, partly because of the earthquakes. I thought, ‘I’m not heading out on the streets without makeup in case there are cameras out there! I’m going to be ready to go!'”
13. She battled with infertility due to endometriosis
Parton was married to her husband from 1966 until he died in 2025. The couple never had children, but Parton explained their decision in several interviews over the years.
She was diagnosed with endometriosis and had a partial hysterectomy in her 30s, which affected her ability to have children.
“I didn’t have children because I believed that God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine,” she said in a 2020 episode of “The Oprah Conversation.”
Parton was also the godmother of singer Miley Cyrus.

14. Parton had a secret song set for release in 2045
In one final surprise that has left everyone stunned, the country music legend recorded an unreleased secret song in 2015 titled “My Place in History” and locked it inside a wooden “Dream Box” at her DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Parton intended for it to be opened and played on her 100th birthday in 2045, so fans will have to wait for another two decades for its release, according to a report from Business Insider.
