Everything You Should Know About Veteran Gospel Artiste, Tope Alabi As She Turns 50


Tope Alabi is a Nigerian gospel singer, movie song composer, songwriter, and actress.

She is widely known for her unique and sonorous voice and her use of deep indigenous language which has earned her accolades locally and internationally.

As she turns 50, here are a few facts about her.

1.Early Life

Patricia Temitope Alabi popularly known as Tope Alabi was born on the 27th of October, 1970 in  Lagos but she hails from Yewa, Imeko, Ogun State.

Born into the family of Joseph Akinyele Obayomi and Agnes Kehinde Obayomi, she is the only daughter of 3 siblings.

Tope Alabi obtained her West Africa School Certificate (WAEC) from Oba Akinyele Memorial High School, Ibadan in 1986. She bagged a degree in Mass Communication from the Federal Polytechnic, Ibadan in 1990.

Her interest in music and drama during her secondary school days, led her to join the then “Jesters International” (Jacob, Papilolo & Aderupoko) group at Ibadan, where she got her initial training and experience in drama.

She later metamorphosed into gospel music after she became a born-again Christian.

2.Career

 

Tope Alabi worked at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Ibadan as a correspondent between 1990-1991 after her graduation.

She also worked with Centre-spread Advertising Limited, Ilupeju area of Lagos, and Re-Union Nigeria Limited, Gbagada, Lagos between 1991 – 1992.

Tope Alabi decided to return to the theatre profession, as she became a part of the prestigious theatre group “Alade Aromire Theatre Group” in 1994.

During her stay at the drama group, she was exposed to core stage drama and acting. Her unique voice gave her the edge as she started making soundtracks for Yoruba movies.


Tope Alabi released her first album in 2001 titled, “Ore ti o common”. This album earned her the moniker Oore ti o Common and Agbo Jesu. The album also brought her fame as it had a good reception from people.

She went on to release her second album Iwe Eri in 2003 and Agbara Re Ni in 2005.

To date, she has eleven albums.

Her 2019 album, The Spirit of Light which has the popular single ‘Logan ti O de’ was done in collaboration with the popular songwriter and photographer TY Bello.

Tope Alabi has written and performed soundtracks for various writers, producers, and directors in the Yoruba movie industry and has to her credit to date, about 350 soundtracks which she has composed.

She is the pacesetter of soundtracks in the Yoruba movie industry.

Her music career has taken her to different countries around the world and she’s one of the most loved gospel singers in Nigeria today.

3.Personal Life

Tope Alabi is happily married to Soji Alabi, an engineer whom she met as far back as 1994. He also doubles as her manager and producer. They got married in 1998.

The relationship produced one daughter, Ayomikun.

4.Awards

In 2015, she won the Gospel Artiste Of The Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards. She also won the Proclamation Award at New York State Senate in 2016.

In 2017, she won the Best Sound Track Artiste for City People’s Movie Awards.

She was crowned the queen of the Yoruba language on 21 May 2019.
