When you think of a Smoothie, what typically comes to mind is fruits; Why not try switching up with Ugwu this time around?

The Ugwu leaf also known as fluted pumpkin leaf is a popular vegetable that originates from West Africa particularly Nigeria.

The leafy vegetable is commonly used in various cuisines and dishes across the country. It is also loaded with lots of nutritional benefits Vitamins A and C, calcium, and iron, a mineral that is key to improving your blood production level.

Here is an easy recipe on how to prepare it:

Ingredients

  • A blender or food processor
  • Ugwu leaves (Pumpkin)
  • One Orange or Pineapple
  • One banana

Preparation of Ugwu Smoothie

  • Rinse the Ugwu leaves properly to remove any dirt on them. (You don’t need to slice the leaves)
  • Chop the banana into pieces
  • Squeeze the juice out of the orange or pineapple ( Better to use the squeezed juice instead of water)
  • Place everything into the blender and blend till it is smooth
  • Pour the smoothie into a glass and drop in some ice cubes if you want it chilled.
  • An optional method will be using milk instead of bananas.
