Viola Davis Interview With Pop Sugar

‘We Have To Understand That When Someone Is Sexually Assaulted’, It’s A Lifetime Of Depression – Viola Davis

Viola Davis was a guest on Pop Sugar’s show Pretty Unfiltered on the 15th of November and she has shown that she is not only beautiful but intelligent.

The “How to get Away With Murder” Star was all candid and answered some very important issues which beguile women

We have some excerpts from her interview:

1. On if there is been a change in women embracing beauty

“I think we have come a long way. when i was a kid, i saw few people who look like me. Where we have a lot to do is that everybody wants to look like someone else. You go to a plastic surgeon and say give me Kim Kardashian nose, Angelina Jolie Nose. You have to take the huge part of accepting you.”

At some point, you have to be okay with you. It is a huge part of accepting one’s beauty.

2. On how she started to feel confident in herself

“Well, I started to listen to that voice no body listened to and that is my own inner voice that always tells me exactly where I need to go and who I am. I don’t want to fit in as long as I want to belong. I listen it to when everything else is failing”

Belonging is something completely different. It is about being your authentic self. ” I used to get teased for using vaseline but now i look at myself but i go “My skin is kind of glowing. i now have a clear image of who i am. I don’t see myself as greasy or negative anymore. The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.

3. On not letting negativity affect her

“I allow myself to admit when something hurts me. i always myself to be angry- i think anger and hurt are legitimate emotions. There is a sacred place that has nothing to do with outside  criticism. My husband, mother and daughter loves me.

You get to a point everyday of living your authentic life”

4.  On what she hopes to see change for those sexually assaualted

“I always say Silence is for the predator. We have to create an environment where shame does not exist. We have to understand that when someone is sexually assaulted, it is a lifetime of assault- depression, suicide, addictions. We have to save each other.

We have to stop shaming people for being victims and believe them, and listen to them.”

5. On if fear of failure ever stopped her

“I fell into a huge depression at 19 in college when i majored in English instead of theatre because i wanted to become a teacher. I was not living my authentic life-  because once again, i wanted to fit in and  i was listening to everyone.

I jumped and look at where it got me- overall, it is the passion and love for what i do is what guides me.”
