Everything To Know About Talented Singer, Waje As She Turns 40


Waje is a popular Nigerian singer and entertainer well known for her electrifying stage presence and resonating performances.

Her name, WAJE is an acronym for “Words aren’t just enough”.

Here are a few things to know about her as she turns 40.

Early life

She was born Aituaje Iruobe on September 1st, 1980 in Akure, Ondo State in Nigeria before moving to Benin City, Edo State.

She is the first child though her parents got divorced when she was young.

Education

Waje attended the Word of Faith Group of Schools and was a part of the choir. As a teenage singer, she once sang gospel tunes to the delight of the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa who was quite impressed by her singing and decided to help her throughout her whole secondary school days.

She bagged a degree in social work at the University of Nigeria. During her school years, Waje focused on her musical works such as school concerts and fellowships.

Music career

In 2007, Waje decided to take the next step and fully launch her music career. She was still a student at the time and paid her dues by doing lots of free shows and gigs, singing at every given opportunity.

She came into limelight in 2008 when she featured in the P-Square hit track titled “Do Me”. This track was critically acclaimed across and was widely known across Africa and some parts of Europe.

She then participated in MTV South Africa’s Advanced Warning (a reality TV show which featured artists that are on the verge of a breakthrough) where she came out as the first runner up.

Her debut album, the eponymously titled W.A.J.E was released on the 1st of May 2013 via a historic live Google+ hangout with fans joining in from around the world, trending globally at no 4 on Twitter.

After her November 2014 video success with “Coco Baby”, in August 2015, she released a single titled “Left For Good” featuring Patoranking and Godwin Strings.

She has also featured on Banky W’s “Thief My Kele” and M.I’s “One Naira”.

Waje headlined the song ‘Strong girl’ which is the theme song for ONE Campaign’s ‘Poverty is Sexist’ in 2015  and also joined Bono in Lagos, Nigeria for the Lagos campaign in 2015.

She was also one of the judges for The Voice Nigeria alongside Tuface (2face Idibia), Timi Dakolo and Patoranking.

Waje’s hits include the critically acclaimed sleeper hit ‘I Wish’, Onye ft Tiwa Savage and Coco Baby ft Diamond Platnumz which was Nigeria’s most played song in December 2014.


She has shared the stage with Grammy award-winning jazz acts Bob James and Ray Hargrove, the legendary Wyclef Jean, Keri Hilson, Ragheb Alama, and others.

She is also one of the few acts to have performed for Nigeria at the 2012 Olympics in London.

She also collaborated with Dencia on “True Love”  and has a list of songs that have received a number of award nominations and winnings.

Waje’s recent reggae song ‘Left For Good’ ft Patoranking debuted at No 3 in Nigeria’s Itunes charts

In January 2019, Waje and Omawumi launched Hernanes Media, a media company that specializes in film and TV production, adverts, content curation, brand event activation, and creative digital marketing. According to the duo, they founded the production company in order to create solutions and provide innovative and creative ideas for the industry.

In March 2019, Waje revealed her intention to quit music professionally. She said she was considering quitting because of the lack of support towards her music.

Acting career

Waje made her acting debut on the movie called Tunnel, with Femi Jacobs, Patrick Doyle, Nse- Etim, Lepacious Bose, and others. She also acted in the movie, First Cut.

Awards And Nominations

Waje has received over 20 awards and nominations worldwide including a Channel O Music Award, 4 World Music Award nominations in 2014 alongside Femi Kuti, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and others.

Her awards include Best Reggae/DanceHall song 2013 (Headies) and Best Female musician 2013 City People Entertainment Awards amongst others.

Personal Life

Waje is a single mother to a 21-year-old girl.

Her sister, Amaka Iruobe is an actress who has had bit parts in popular soap opera Tinsel and the movie First Cut. She is also best friends with fellow singer, Omawumi.

Waje was featured in the Somkele Idhalama-produced movie She Is which premiered in April 2019. She also worked with Omawumi to record the movie’s soundtrack.

Charity works

Waje worked with the youths of her community through an organization “Waje’s Safe House”, where she teamed up with other NGOs quarterly to help fight for their cause.
