Meet Alexia Jayy Who Made History On ‘The Voice’ As First Black Woman Winner

Alexia Jayy

On April 14, 2026, Alexia Jayy made history by becoming the first Black woman to win The Voice since the show’s 15-year inception.

The 31-year-old R&B singer from Alabama became the winner of The Voice Season 29, marking an unforgettable moment in history. As the winner, Jayy receives $100,000 and a recording deal with Universal Music Group.

In the blind auditions, she sang “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” by Carole King. All of the season’s three coaches (John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine) turned their chairs for Jayy.

She selected Team Adam Levine specifically because of her son, Matthew, who expressed his pleasure for Levine’s music, a decision that marked her path toward championship glory. Her victory marked Adam Levine’s fourth championship as a coach, tying him with Kelly Clarkson for second-most wins.

Born in Irvington, Alabama, on October 20, 1992, Alexia Jayy began to sing at the age of two. She performed at the Apollo Theater at nine years old and continued to pursue singing throughout her schooling.

Jayy released her debut single, “Who Raised You,” in May 2021, which references her experiences with motherhood in modern-day America. Jayy followed this with additional singles and, in September 2025, released her debut EP, Mixed Emotions.

She recently had the opportunity to perform alongside Lauryn Hill at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Jayy is a mother of two children, Matthew and Harmony. She became a mother at the age of 21.

She released her single “Rent Free” following her win.
