In practically every Nigerian home, a great amount of money is wasted on electricity consumption. This is because it is estimated that an average of 35% of the power used is actually wasted.

This is surely not great neither good for your bank account nor the environment.

So what consumes the most energy in your home?

The infographic below shows the breakdown of the energy use of a typical home. It highlights the biggest electricity users over the period of a year.

How can you save on your electricity spend?

  • One of the simplest ways to reduce wasted energy and money is to unplug all “vampire devices”. These are appliances and electronics that suck power even when they are turned off. They include TV sets, phones, printers, cable boxes, DVD players, laptops, computers, routers and modems, phones, and gaming consoles. Always pull the plug on these devices when not in use.
  • A useful method is to put a bunch of devices on one extension box and switch it off when not in use.
  • Buy products that are listed as having low standby power usage.
  • Look for ENERGY STAR appliances that are designed to rely on less standby power.
  • Conduct a home energy audit to see what products are old, inefficient, and using too much power.
