‘My Lawyers Are Studying It For Our Next Line of Action’ – Blessing Okagbare Reacts To 10-Year Doping Ban

Nigerian sprinter, Blessing Okagbare has reacted to the 10-year ban issued to her by the Athletic Integrity Unit (AIU) for breaching anti-doping rules.

The AIU announced on Friday, February 18, its disciplinary tribunal had prohibited the Nigerian sprinter from participating in World Athletics-sanctioned track and field events for the next 10 years.

Okagbare got a five-year ban for the presence and use of multiple prohibited substances and another half-a-decade for her refusal to cooperate with the AIU’s investigation of her case.

Reacting to the news in a tweet posted on Saturday, Okagbare acknowledged the ban, adding that her “lawyers are currently studying it for our next line of action”.

“My attention has been drawn to the statement issued by the AIU regarding its disciplinary panel decision. My lawyers are currently studying it for our next line of action, which we will inform you soon,” the tweet reads.

33-year-old Okagbare was expelled from the Tokyo Olympics last year before the women’s 100m semi-finals after testing positive for human growth hormone at an out-of-competition test in Slovakia on July 19.

“The Disciplinary Tribunal has banned Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare for a total of 10 years,” read an AIU statement.

AIU had revealed that Okagbare tested positive for blood-booster EPO in Nigeria in June, in addition to another failed test for human growth hormone in Slovakia in July, which was announced during the Olympics.
