Chigoziem Emereuwa lost her entire family in a car accident that claimed the lives of everyone except her in August 2001, but unbelievably, she was not deterred by that.
This Nigerian millennial woman, at the young age of 27, is about to graduate with a PhD in pure mathematics.
Although her life hasn’t always been a bed of roses and has been visited with more than the average individual’s share of thorns, she still has her joy.
Recounting her ordeal, she said in an interview
“I only remember being in the back seat, playing a travel game with my sister, and then waking up in the hospital. I don’t recall any form of PTSD, as my paternal family made sure I wasn’t alone; I didn’t even get a chance to mourn properly. It seemed like the loss hit my aunts more than it did me so I had to be strong. However, my grades did go down and my mom was no longer there to push me. I felt no urge to work hard since I had learned that you could lose everything in a second, so why bother?”
When asked what has kept her going, she replied: “Every time I wake up, I remind myself that I am my parent’s legacy so I try to stay focused on my endgame, which is to be better than I was yesterday.”
Apparently, her story is one of resilience, determination, and strength. The power of a woman who, against all odds, rose to do well.
This young woman serves as a constant reminder that you can get through anything (no matter how hard it is) if you put your mind to it, and as long as you believe in yourself, your experiences won’t have to define you.
