Today we celebrate Nigerian environmentalist, Doyinsola Ogunye who has made it her lifetime task to take care of the environment and teach young kids about their natural habitat.
Doyinsola is the founder of the Mental and Environmental Development Initiative for Children, an initiative aimed at teaching children about the importance of taking care of the environment. MEDIC’s vision is to create a cleaner, more habitable, more united world, where children are the purifiers and the spear-head of the revolution.
Growing up, Doyinsola played on the shorelines of Lagos State with sand and sand castle toys. While at the university, she always desired to study and relax at the beach but was always put off by the dirt. So, she decided to take action. She gathered volunteers to clean the beach and sort the recyclable waste. Every week, they collect about 50 large sacks of litter.
With the belief that change starts with the young, Doyinsola founded Kids Beach Garden, a place where kids come to learn about the environment whilst cleaning.
In July 2009, Doyinsola, a law graduate from the University of Lagos joined the then Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola on a tree planting exercise.
Asides from cleaning public beaches, Doyinsola is also rescuing endangered sea turtles and planting trees to replenish the environment.
Recently, Doyin made rounds on social media when she had to save an endangered leatherback turtle from touts in a popular Lagos beach. After several hours of begging and pleading they finally let the animal return to the beach.
