Gabrielle Union was left “devastated” and “broken into pieces” after Dwyane Wade confessed that he conceived a baby with another woman.
The Cheaper by the Dozen star, 48, got candid about her feelings on the situation for the first time publicly in an essay for Time, in which she recalled the couple’s emotional journey to welcoming daughter Kaavia James Union-Wade, now 2, via surrogate in 2018.
“To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience. There are people — strangers who I will never meet — who have been upset that I have not previously talked about that trauma,” Union writes.
“I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them now. But truth matters.”
Union began dating Wade in 2008, and he fathered his now-7-year-old son, Xavier, in 2013, while he and Union were on a break.
The retired Miami Heat player was also a father to Zaire, 19, and Zaya, 14, as well as guardian to his nephew, Dahveon, 19. Eventually, Wade and Union married in 2014 and attempted to have their own children, which proved to be a challenge when Union suffered multiple miscarriages..
“It should go without saying that we were not in a good place at the time that child was conceived,” Union wrote. “But we were doing much better when he finally told me about the pregnancy. To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience.”
Union, who previously revealed her diagnosis with adenomyosis, has struggled with infertility, experiencing multiple IVF cycles, and “eight or nine” miscarriages.
