Recipe: How To Make Ghanaian Rice Water

Ghanaian rice water also called rice water porridge is a food native to the people of Ghana.

‘Rice Water’ is basically rice cooked in water into a mushy porridge texture and it’s a popular breakfast choice in Ghana.
The best part is it is very easy and simple to prepare.

Here is a detailed recipe on how to make Ghanaian rice water.


  • 1 cup of rice
  • 5 cups of water
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar or sweetener
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • Evaporated Milk


  • Wash rice till it is clear and pour in a pot of water.
  • Cook on medium heat for about 20 minutes or until it is soft (Use more water, if necessary)
  • Add a pinch of salt.
  • Using the flat side of a wooden spoon, crush the rice to achieve a pudding-like consistency
  • Add the nutmeg and let it simmer for about five minutes.
  • Serve with milk and sweetener of your choice
