British Prime Minister, Liz Truss Sets New Record In History As She Announces Resignation

liz truss British Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned Thursday, October 20 after just six weeks in office.

Truss will be the UK’s shortest-serving leader ever, with another Conservative leadership election due to take place within a week.

The previous holder of this record, George Canning, lasted 119 days in the early 19th century; Truss announced her resignation after 44 days.

Her announcement in Downing Street came hours after Suella Braverman, Truss’ home secretary, dramatically resigned with a blistering attack on the PM’s leadership.

Truss fired her finance minister just last week after a disastrous and since-ditched financial plan caused turmoil on the markets.

Having been formally appointed by Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 6, just days before the monarch’s death, Truss is now by far the shortest-serving prime minister in British history and will be remembered as one of the most calamitous.
