Morayo has over the years built a career for herself in the media and journalism industry and as become a voice for women all over the world.

As she turns 40, here is a brief profile on this trailblazer.

Early Life

Morayo Afolabi-Brown was born on July 6, 1980, in Lagos to the family of Late Alao Aka-Bashorun. She was born into a polygamous family and her father was a popular lawyer and activist. Coincidentally, she and her mother share the same birth date.

She attended Corona School for her primary education before proceeding to the United States. She studied Political Science at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. She graduated in 2002.

She was involved in a ghastly motor accident when she was 19 years which left her in a coma for five days. She was on a wheelchair for four months and her chances of walking again were 50/50.

It was while she was schooling in the United States that the concept of ‘Your View’ came. She admits falling in love while watching the American version and decided she will start a Nigerian version whenever she returned home.

After about 10 years abroad, she moved back to Nigeria in 2004.

Career

Morayo worked briefly at City Express Bank on her arrival back to Nigeria after NYSC.

She began her media career at a PR Company called CMC Connect in 2005, where she served as a Client Service Manager. She later moved to CUE Media, a content development company where she served there as Head, Content, and Development, and later became Senior Executive, Marketing, and Research.

She also worked as a Producer on a consumer education TV production for MTN Director – Dotun Seweje.


She then moved to HiTV, Nigeria’s first indigenous cable station provider where she worked from 2007 to 2011. She started out as Business Development Manager and later became Head of Content and Channels Acquisition.

She joined TVC in 2012  as Deputy Director of Programmes and later birthed the popular talk show ‘Your View’ in 2013. Your View is currently one of the most-watched programs on TV.

She resigned from her position as Director of Programmes in 2019.

Achievements

At CUE Media, she developed a script (The Room), which won the New Directions pitch for M-Net on May 4, 2007.

She developed a TV reality show concept – Make A Joyful Noise and also worked on the United Bank for Africa (UBA), documentary as a Producer. She was the Concept Originator of “Girlfriends” (TV drama series), and “Shop Easy” and “Changing Lives” (Talk Show).

At HITV, there was an increased advertising revenue from 2- digit figure, to 3-digit in two years. She also increased sponsorship revenue from $1m to approximately $20million in two and a half years. She successfully managed a two-month live reality TV show called Koko Mansion.

She helped TVC become one of the top three news channels in Nigeria.

Morayo was named by WIJ Africa in 2020 as one of the 25 most powerful women in Journalism.

She also won the 2020 ‘Woman of the Year Award’ by Her Network.

Personal Life

She is married to Femi Afolabi Brown, and they are blessed with four children including a set of twins.

Controversy

Morayo received backlash online when she said she can’t allow her husband to bathe her daughter for fear of molestation.
