#MSMEDay19 : The World Celebrates Micro-, Small and Medium Enterprises on June 27

msme day 2019

The micro-, small and medium enterprises are celebrated every year on June 27 in order to create awareness about their contribution to society and the business world at large. Despite the fact that majority of the nation’s economy doesn’t come from these enterprises, it is important to note that they contribute greatly to the daily needs of people in the community.

The small and medium-scale businesses contribute enormously to the global  economy by creating jobs for women, youth, and many job seekers in underdeveloped and developing countries. These jobs may include trading goods, fishing, soap making, small-scale retail businesses, shoe making, food sales, tailoring and many others.

These businesses also fill the void in the community where needed. For instance, a small-scale farmer can provide food resources in a community where that food resource is particularly scarce or absent. This helps the people to revitalise their nutritional value and live a healthier life.

The MSME Day was established in 2017, and now, the United Nations marks the MSME Day annually. Across the globe, there are lectures, seminars, presentations and even social media content on the MSME Day 2019, and the UN has specifically made it public for wider knowledge and appropriate awareness.

On how MSMEs contribute to the sustainable development goals, the UN says on the official website:

Micro-, small and medium sized enterprises are vital in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular in promoting innovation, creativity and decent work for all.

Efforts to enhance access to finance for SMEs across key sectors of national economies are an important element of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG targets 8.3 and 9.3 call for enhancing the access of SMEs to financial services. In addition, SMEs are an important element in the implementation of SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure).

We continue to celebrate the owners of these businesses and create awareness so that their small or medium-scale businesses will generate higher profit over time.
