10 Nigerian Celebrity Designers Who Have Excelled Beyond Expectations In The Fashion Industry


 

The fashion Industry is not as it used to be. Many changes have been infused into women fashion and quite a lot of designers are imbibing these new trends and doing so  well for themselves.

These women went into the fashion line and created a change. They changed the game, brought new ideas and now, they are celebrities in their own rights.

Here are a few of such designers

1. Kunbi Oyelese (Aprilbykunbi)

Kunbi attended the renowned New York Fashion Institute of Technology. and in April 2010, she launched her fashion house with the name; April By Kunbi.

April By Kunbi is a one stop source and a lifestyle brand for everything from wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, evening and cocktail dresses to casual/active wear, sleepwear, accessories and lingerie.

2.Toluwaloju Olowofoyeku (Toju Foyeh)

The young entrepreneur launched her debut collection in Lagos, Nigeria at the Arise Fashion Week in December 2011 and has since then become a style phenomenon in the fashion industry back home and abroad.

Ceoluminee began her fashion career in 2013 after she graduated from Lagos State University. As there was no job and she did not want to be idle, she sought ways to make dresses for a few people.

Her big break came when Mercy Aigbe asked her to become her designer and also introduced her to a host of other celebrities.

Mercy Aigbe, Mide Martins, Adunni Ade,  Fathia Balogun amongst others are part of her clientele.

4. Matopeda Abiola (Topefnr)

The designer started off her fashion career as a stylist and then a personal shopper before finally becoming a designer. She has dressed celebrities such as Toke Makinwa, Adesuwa Etomi, Geneveive Nnaji, Tiwa Savage amongst many others. Much revered singer Beyonce has been spotted wearing a Fnr piece.

5. Lanre Daslyva Ajayi (Lanredaslyva)

After studying finance and business in the UK, Lanre Da Silva Ajayi changed her path and became a fashion designer in Nigeria.  Lanre’s style is rich in femininity and uses a multitude of embellishments. Her love for Vlisco fabrics is  what ignites her creativity in  most of her designs.


 

6. Derin Fabikun (Fablanebyderin)

In 2oo9, at age 19, Derin Fabikun started her business after indulging in her love for designer for a long time. She’s a graduate of management from Covenant University.

She has dressed the likes of Mimi Onalaja, Ini Dinma Okojie and a host of others.

Derin hopes that her designs can be worn from runways, to red carpets, to casual relaxation, walks round the park. From dinners, to lunches, to conferences.

7. TUBO ( Sandrah Tubobereni)

TUBO is an amazing womenswear label, best known for her creativity in redesigning the traditional African bridal attires, chic prêt-à-porter fashion clothing, and distinctive haute couture pieces with amazing silhouette.

In 2014,Sandrah Tubobereni switched from her career in Finance and business development to fashion designing. Her vision is to change the world through fashion and make “TUBO” a multi award winning global brand present on the international runways and high streets as well as wardrobes of stylish women and celebrities.

8. Wana Sambo (Wana Sambo)

Although officially begun in 2010, she started the Wana Sambo Clothing Company in her teenage years in the university where she sought a particular style which wasn’t sold and decided to create such brand that she and her friends, the fashion goons, could relate to. That was the major influence behind the birth of the Wana Sambo brand.

She has worked in Interior Designing and the Entertainment & Music Sector. Her first runway event was a charity event/auction for an Orphanage called “Haven for the Nigerian child”.

She has as her clients celebrities like Beverly Naya, Gbemi Olateru, Toke Makinwa and many others.

9. Toyin Lawani (Tiannah’s Place Empire)

Toyin Lawani runs Tiannah’s Place Empire as the Creative Director and CEO. 10. Lisa Folawiyo

Nigerian fashion designer Lisa Folawiyo is celebrated for her colourful collections that fuse traditional West African fabrics with modern tailoring and beaded embellishments.

Since starting her label in 2005, Folawiyo has spearheaded the movement of Nigerian designers achieving international recognition for their work. She has a knack for elevating traditional African prints above the status quo, making them relevant for a global audience.

She has showrooms in both Nigeria and New York and her collections are stocked in the UK, the US, South Africa and Nigeria itself.

In 2012, Folawiyo won the African Fashion Awards. Championed by Vogue Italia, Folawiyo has also partnered with L’Oreal and done a trunk show on Moda Operandi .

Having originally trained as a lawyer, Folawiyo came to fashion with no formal training. She founded her own line, Lisa Folawiyo – previously known as Jewel by Lisa – in 2005.

Her collections are exclusively crafted from Ankara textiles; vibrant wax-resistant dyed fabrics characteristic of West Africa.

Her garments are embellished with beads, sequins and crystals all sewn by hand in local workshops in Nigeria. She attributes her success to finding and sticking to this unusual aesthetic.
