Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister has been appointed Director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Her appointment not only makes her the First African but also the first woman to lead the WTO.
The news was announced on the official WTO’s Twitter page on Monday.

Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.

The WTO said its members took the decision to appoint @NOIweala at a special meeting of the General Council, following a selection process that included eight candidates from around the world.

All WTO member countries except the US had voted Okonjo-Iweala as their preferred candidate in 2020. However Trump’s removal from office may ahve palyed a big role
