Recipe: How To Make Popular Ghanaian Snack, Poloo

Poloo

Poloo is a popular street snack that originates from the West African country of Ghana.

Popularly called Ghanaian coconut biscuits, it is also very easy and simple to make with the ingredients readily available in the market.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups coconut flakes/grated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons Margarine
  • 3 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Coconut Milk
  • Oil

Preparation

1. Remove coconut from shells. Using a food processor or blender, crush the coconuts into fine bits.

2. Add your ingredients: flour, grated coconut, nutmeg, vanilla essence, sugar, salt, and margarine, and mix them all. Add your coconut milk to form a dough. The dough should be slightly tough and not sticky.

3. Lightly dust a surface with flour. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut the dough into the desired size.

4. Heat oil in a deep fryer. When hot, fry poloo dough till it is golden brown.

5. Serve and enjoy!
