Simisola Gbadamosi, a 13-year-old Nigerian voice actress, has made history by becoming the youngest Nigerian to receive an Emmy nomination.
She was recognized for her captivating performance as Tola Martins in the Disney+ animated series Iwájú’, which is set in a futuristic Lagos. Her nomination is in the “Outstanding Younger Voice Performer in a Preschool, Children’s, or Young Teen Program” category at the 3rd Annual Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, scheduled for March 15, 2025, in Los Angeles.
Born April 17, 2011, her journey into the creative arts began early, which ignited her entrepreneurial spirit at the age of 3. Simisola is also the founder of Simi’s Bakehouse. Off-screen, Simisola enjoys reading, drawing, cooking, playing the violin, and spending quality time with loved ones. Her passion for creativity and community shines through in all aspects of her life.
“Iwájú” is a six-episode series that premiered on February 28, 2024, following the story of Tola and her friend Kole as they navigate the challenges of their contrasting worlds. This groundbreaking collaboration between Disney Animation and the Pan-African company Kugali Media marks the first time a Nigerian television show has been recognized at the prestigious Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.
In addition to Simisola’s historic nomination, “Iwájú has also been nominated in two other categories: ‘Outstanding Children’s or Young Teen Animated Series’ and ‘Outstanding Directing for an Animated Series,”, an achievement that highlights the growing influence of Nigerian creativity on the international stage and reflects a shift toward greater inclusivity in animated storytelling.
