How Tinuade Sanda, The Ex-MD/CEO Of EKEDC Was ‘Fired’ Twice In Less Than One Month + Things To Know About Her


It is not common to get fired twice in the space of one month. Well, that is the story of Tinuade Sanda.

West Power & Gas (WPG), the parent company of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has terminated the appointment of the embattled former Managing Director and Chief Executive of the power distribution company just a few weeks after her recall.

In a letter dated April 17, 2024, and signed by the company’s Chair, Charles Momoh, the news comes amid controversy surrounding her removal by EKEDC.

Sanda had returned to WPG after her controversial removal as EKEDC MD in March 2024 by the chairman of EKEDC, Dere Otubu allegedly in compliance with the orders of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

After joining WPG in 2013, She held several positions at the company before she was moved to EKEDC where she emerged as deputy MD and then MD/CEO in 2022.

Here are some things to know about her:.

1. She was born Tinuade Toyin Sanda on August 6, 1979.

2. She is the eldest of two children.

3. She holds a degree in accounting from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, UK.

4. Before her foray into the power sector, she worked in the banking sector as a relationship manager with Chartered Bank before joining Access Bank in 2003.

5. Before joining West Power Gas in 2013 as a Chief Financial Officer, she was head, of finance and administration at Vanguard Energy Resources.

6. Sanda was selected to be part of the leadership team for the acquisition of EKO Disco in 2013.


7. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Nigeria; the Institute of Credit Management Administration and the Institute of Professional Financial Managers, in London. She is also an associate member of the Risk Management Association of Nigeria Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria; and the Institute of Directors, Nigeria.

8. She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Financial Management & Entrepreneurship from the ICON University of Management Science & Technology, Benin Republic in 2020.

9. She made history when she became the first woman to become MD/CEO of EKEDC in March 2022, taking over from Adeoye Fadeyibi.

10. She helped EKEDC rise to the top as Nigeria’s leading distribution company just a year after her appointment.

11. She initiated the launch of a fast-delivery mass metering program (Mobile MAP Initiative) in Nigeria, delivering over 80,832 electricity meters.

12. She presently sits as a member of the power subcommittee for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

13. Sanda is the founder of EmHERging a mentorship platform.

14. She was awarded by the Nigerian Books of Record, the Africa Safety Award for Excellence (AfriSAFE) as CEO of the year in 2022.

15. She was named among the top 3 most influential personalities in the Nigerian power sector in 2022.

16. She was invited to The Women in the Sustainable Economy (WISE) Initiative, launched by Vice President Kamala Harris, in 2023.
