Toke Makinwa is a radio personality TV host, entrepreneur, vlogger and style influencer.
The self-proclaimed “Baby girl for life” who is also an award-winning author is celebrating her birthday today.
To celebrate this iconic woman we’re sharing noteworthy facts about her personal life, career, and achievements.
Early Life
Toke Makinwa was born on November 3, 1984, at St. Nicholas Hospital in Onikan, Lagos. She is a native of Idanre in Ondo state.
The second out of four children, – 3 girls and a boy, Toke lost her parents to a gas explosion at the age of 8.
After the death of her parents, Toke and her siblings moved into the house of her eldest aunt, Big Mummy, in Ikoyi, Lagos. She went to high school at Federal Government Girls’ College Oyo, Oyo State and graduated from the University of Lagos where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature.
Career
Makinwa made her major media debut in 2010 on Rhythm 93.7 FM’s The Morning Drive show as a co-host.
Prior to that time, she had a short gig as a teenage Radio presenter at Cool FM this was in 1999 yet it was short-lived because her parents didn’t consider being an OAP as a profitable job.
Ever since she landed her job with Rhythm 93.7FM, Toke Makinwa has anchored several other programs on radio and television.
In 2012, She was announced as one of the hosts alongside Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis of 3LiveChicks, an entertainment program that was initially launched for the web community alone but was later extended to terrestrial TV stations.
In January 2014, Hip Hop World Magazine announced Makinwa as the host for its show Trending which debuted on Valentine’s Day.
She also joined the EbonyLife TV team as a co-host for Moments. She has since featured in many episodes on the EbonyLife TV Network. She has also had the opportunity to Host The Annual MBGN Beauty Pageant and many other award events.
Personal Life
Makinwa got married to her lover of many years, Maje Ayida on 15 January 2014.
They split in 2015 following a scandal revealing he had impregnated his ex-girlfriend. Makinwa’s marriage to Ayida was dissolved by a Lagos High Court in October 2017 on the grounds that Ayida committed adultery
Business Endeavours
In 2012, Makinwa launched her YouTube vlog series Toke Moments which soon gained popularity amongst followers.
In 2016, Toke Makinwa released her memoir titled ‘On Becoming’ which talked about her personal struggles and life with her ex-husband Maje Ayida where she revealed a lot of secrets.
Following the success of her book, Toke took things a step further when in 2017 she launched her signature leather goods line, Toke Makinwa Luxury.
In 2018, she raised the bar even higher by launching her skincare brand, Glow By TM

Awards & Nominations
In 2012, she was nominated for On-Air Personality Of The Year (Radio) by the Future Awards. In 2013, she won the Nigerian Broadcasters’ Award for Outstanding Female Presenter Of The Year and was also nominated for Radio OAP Of The Year by Nigerian Entertainment Awards.
In 2014, Makinwa was nominated by Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in the category of Favorite Nigerian On-Air Personality. She was also nominated Entertainment Personality Of The Year & OAP of the year by Nigerian Entertainment Awards.
Toke Makinwa was nominated for TV presenter of the year at the 2014 ELOY Awards.
She won the Glitz Awards for Style Influencer of the year and the Avance Media Most Influential Young Nigerian in Media both in 2017. She won the Africa Youth Award in 2018 for 100 Most Influential Young Africans.
Endorsements
Makinwa became an ambassador of the United Africa Company of Nigeria in 2013. She also signed a multi-million naira contract with Nestlé Nigeria to become the new face of Maggi.
In 2016 she became the brand ambassador and face of Mecran Cosmetics.
