The marvellous Nigerian Christy Essien will always be remembered in our hearts with her songs and great deeds.

Christy Essien was a powerful and noble woman who had many great achievements in her lifetime.

A Google doodle of her was used to honour her on her posthumous birthday.

Here are 15 things you probably didn’t know about her:


1. Her full name is Christy Uduak Essien-Igbokwe

2. She was born on 11 November, 1960.

3. She began her musical career in Secondary School by singing at various clubs like Uka Onu’s Club and Unikoko in Abia State.

4. She was a musician and an actress.

5. She was sometimes called ‘Nigeria’s Lady of Songs’ for her popular single Seun Rere.

6. She was the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) between 1996 and 1999.

7. She sang songs in Igbo, Ibibio, Efik, Hausa, Yoruba as well as in English.

8. She always supported raising issues affecting women and children and played roles in some movies like Flesh and Blood and Scars of Womanhood. Both movies addressed issues of child abuse and female circumcision.

9. She is recognized as the initiator of the first meeting that contributed to the formation of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria in 1981.

 

10. Christy was the chairwoman and managing director of Soul Train entertainment limited.

11. She was also involved in charity programmes and humanitarian services. 

12. She won numerous awards in her lifetime, including national and international awards.

13. In 1987, she composed and performed what is now known as Akwa Ibom’s anthem, Akwa Ibom Mmi (“My Akwa Ibom”)

14. She was in charge of a shop where she sold printing machines in Etinan, her native town

15. She died after a brief illness in an undisclosed hospital in Lagos on June 30, 2011.
