The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to introduce a Contactless Passport Renewal System with the first phase launching in Canada on November 1.

The second phase will expand to the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Italy on November 15, while the third phase will grant Nigeria and other countries access to the system starting December 1.

The initiative was designed to simplify and modernize the passport renewal process, allowing Nigerians to apply for passport renewals online, and reducing the need for in-person visits to NIS offices. This was made known in a video by the NIS via its official X account on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

“In its continued effort to serve the Nigerian public more efficiently and create a functional system that meets global standards, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a new contactless and issuance process starting from November 1st, 2024.

“Individuals will be able to apply to renew their international passports from the comfort of their homes without having to visit having to visit any NIS office,” it said.

The NIS video provided a comprehensive overview of the new process, particularly on how the process of the contactless passport application process works. The process is applicable only to passport renewals.

Nigerians can renew their passports by downloading the NIS mobile app from Google Play, the App Store, or Windows Store, or by visiting the web portal at www.passport.immigration.gov.ng.
