23 Year Old UK-Based Nigerian Law Student Dies After Eating Cannabis-Laced Sweet

A 23-year-old UK-based Nigerian has died after eating a cannabis-laced sweet.

Damilola Olakanmi, a law student, bought the “gummies” through a messaging app and they were delivered to her home in Ilford, London, where she immediately fell ill after eating them last Tuesday night, MyLondon reports.

Detectives say Damilola and her 21-year-old friend both immediately felt unwell after taking just one sweet each.

Police and paramedics were called to an address in east London after the two women fell ill and both women were taken to a nearby hospital.

Damilola tragically died in hospital on Saturday.

The death has prompted police to issue a warning not to buy or consume such products.

Justice campaigner and family friend Richard Taylor, 75, told The Sun he had been supporting mum Wumi, 51, who was at her daughter’s bedside until she died on Saturday.

He said: “She’s lost her only child and her life has been ruined forever. It’s incredibly sad.

“Damilola was at her mum’s house in Ilford when her and her friend took the sweets.

“This should be a warning to anyone involved in drugs.

“Drugs are all over the place and young children are able to buy them in schools. It’s just like laughing gas, you see it all over the streets.

“It’s a real danger to young people. Damilola was a smart young girl who was studying law.

“Her mum Wumi is completely distraught and she can’t stay in the house where it happened. Her life is upside down. They are a devout Christian family. That’s how they were raised.”

A special post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

The second woman has since been discharged from the hospital following treatment.

Police are waiting on the result of tests on a number of sweets that have been recovered.
