This Nigerian Firefighter Opens Up On The Challenges Of Being In A Male-Dominated Profession

Firefighting is said to be a man’s job, but Dennis Dooshima is proving that statement wrong.

The female firefighter who celebrated her birthday on the 15th of March  talks about life as a firefighter, the challenges she faces and what made her take up the profession.

According to her “(It’s) tasking and challenging because no event of a fire is the same and I just want you to picture it when there is a fire in a building or a fuel station everybody runs out but we firemen will go in, rescue and put out the fire,“.

Putting out fires especially in a city like Lagos is not a walk in the park. According to Dooshima, firefighters go through a lot in the course of doing their job.

She points out that “All kinds of tragedies, ranging from fires to cardiac arrests, watching citizens homes burn, knowing someone is inside and it’s too late for them, watching a local business that you patronize burning, witnessing the death of friends in vehicle accidents, deaths of elderly neighbors, we see things that the general public tries to put in the back of their minds, we know it’s there, but try to not think of it“.

The Tiv native says “The best part of the job for me is knowing I’m doing my part to make a difference. With all the negatives people tend to attach to us, we’re on the ground to do some good. Whether paid or volunteer, that’s what this job is all about. There will never be a better feeling than knowing you did your part in saving someone’s life, possessions, or home. Thanks to all of the fellow brothers and sisters for doing your part.
