Cosmetics giant Neutrogena has issued a recall of one of its popular makeup-removing wipes after laboratory testing revealed bacterial contamination. The recall covers the product Neutrogena Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes (50-count, 25-packs) from lot number 1835U6325A.
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), approximately 1,312 cases of this lot were distributed to retail locations in four U.S. states: Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The recall date is reported as September 19, 2025.
Testing conducted during an internal investigation by the product’s parent company, Kenvue Brands LLC, revealed the presence of the bacterium Pluralibacter gergoviae (P. gergoviae) in the wipes. While this bacterium is not commonly harmful to the general population, it can pose serious risks to people with weakened immune systems, chronic health conditions, or open wounds, or those who are undergoing surgery. The bacterium has been linked to eye infections, urinary tract infections, sepsis, and respiratory illnesses in such vulnerable cases.
The FDA classifies this as a Class II recall, meaning that use of the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, and the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
In a company statement, Kenvue confirmed the recall, noting that the recall was issued “out of an abundance of caution,” citing observed procedural deficiencies during manufacturing despite the product having met release specifications at the time. It has cooperated with the FDA and initiated the recall for the affected lot.
While the company did not offer any instructions as to what customers should do with the recalled product, it’s best to stop using it and throw the product away.
