These Nigerian Albino Twins Are Not Allowing Their Condition Hold Them Back From Making Waves In The Global Fashion World

Meeting an albino is not common but meeting albino identical twins is very rare.

24-year-old Identical twins, Rosemary and Christina Alubankudi Ajiboye who were born and raised in New York but are of Nigerian origin are part of this group as they inspire people to be proud of the skin they were born in, through their love for fashion.

The identical twins were born with albinism – a rare group of genetic disorders that cause the skin, hair or eyes to have little or no colour.

It’s also associated with vision problems, according to Healthline.

Rosemary told Barcroft TV: “Our big message would be to just embrace your skin, embrace your beauty.

“Use fashion to enhance yourself and conquer your confidence and be the best person you could be.”

The fashionistas were born and raised in Manhattan and have recently completed their Masters in Global Fashion Enterprise at Thomas Jefferson University and Philadelphia University.

Christina said: “I love fashion, I love dealing with clothing and accessories and dressing people and seeing how clothes would fit on someone.”

But, while Christina and Rosemary are confident now the girls say that being different hasn’t always been easy – and they were teased in school.

Rosemary explained: “We would literally sit on our own; some people didn’t sit with us.

“Having albinism, it’s really hard when you’re growing up with it because at one point you don’t understand what it is, then you get to that stage and be like, ‘Oh my god, I’m different from other people.’ ”

It wasn’t until they started at the university that the two started being more open-minded about their condition.

“I feel like college was a whole other ballgame – a whole other world that just opened our eyes to the fact that there are so many different people,” Rosemary says.

“It’s just so awesome because people really take you into consideration.”

The pair have poor eyesight and their skin is sensitive to light, which frustrates them at times.

“We have really low vision and sometimes, even though we have glasses on, we can’t really see from far and people don’t understand that, and that’s a frustrating thing,” Rosemary explains.

Christina added: “And you’ve just got to be aware of going outside and staying under the sun too much, so like you know how people go to the beach and they lay under the sun, we can’t do that at all.”

Both of the women share a love of fashion and it brings them even closer together.

Christina said: “We love fashion, we love to look at different types of fashion bloggers, we love to see their style, we love to see how people dress.

“Instagram, social media is a really great platform where I am seeing so many people coming out with albinism, bringing awareness to it.”

Rosemary and Christina, have both been obsessed with fashion since their childhood and now say that blogging about their outfits is a creative outlet.

In future the twins aim to start their own fashion brand to show more of albinism in the industry.

Christina said: “We just want to show our own sense of style and just to have fun.”

Rosemary added: “At the end of the day there is not one type of beauty, there are multiple types of beauty and if we have to showcase everything so that everybody can be confident, everybody has to be happy and everybody can see themselves in someone else.
