“I Suffered Depression But Family Support Made It Bearable” – Breast Cancer Survivor Courageously Shares Story

Breast Cancer survivor and South African fashion entrepreneur, Nomalanga Nyanda recently did the most fearless thing.

In commemoration of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nyanda shared her breast cancer survival story and also, she shared a topless photo of herself showing her mastectomy scar.

Nyanda who was diagnosed when her cancer was already at an advanced stage shared the story of her journey through the dreaded terminal disease, struggles and triumph.

My case was treated as an emergency because of the stage of the cancer and on the 12th of January 2015 she started my cycles of chemotherapy. This was over a six month period and it was to shrink the tumor. The side effects included nausea, fatigue, restlessness, insomnia, hair loss, hot flushes and darkened nails. I also suffered from depression, but the support of family made it bearable. We were in this together. My family members even cut their hair as part of their support. #BreastCancer #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastCancerMonth

After surgery it was radiotherapy also known as radiation, it is used to destroy the remaining cancer cells. It was effortless with no pain. The only discomfort was in my scar as it became stiff and hard due to the heat from radiation. Within three months I started physiotherapy to assist with my arm and chest movement. The side effects from radiation were restlessness, severe hot flushes and insomnia. #BreastCancer #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastCancerMonth
