Pounded Yam Blender

Here Is An Easy Method To Make Pounded Yam With A Blender

Pounded yam is one of the African delicacies most Nigerians will list as their favourite meal. Made from Yam, it is one of the best swallows out there and can be eaten with Egusi, Efo, Oha and the likes.

You do not have to stress yourself with a mortar and pestle also. That is in the past. A blender makes it all so easy.

This is a step by step guide

  1. Peel, rinse and cut the white puna yam into medium cubes.
  2. Put in a pot, pour water to cover the pieces of yam and start cooking on medium heat.
  3. Cook till the yams are well done. Two signs of well-done yam for making the perfect pounded yam are: the surrounding water will be cloudy and slightly soupy and it is very easy to drive a knife into the pieces of yam. Those read like three signs though hahaha.
  4. Once you are happy, decant the water and set aside. You may need it later but from my experience, pounded yam made in a blender is usually perfect and does not need water. Those blender blades sure come through with pounded yam.
  5. Put the cooked pieces of yam into the jug of your blender. I usually start with a few yam cubes, blend for 2 seconds and add a few more. Then blender for about 5 seconds and you have your smooth pounded yam. This time depends on the rating of your blender. You can keep checking it and once it is smooth, stop the blender. No need to leave your blender running for too long because the pounded yam becomes softer and more elastic. Watch the video below to see this in action.

Pounded Yam is best served immediately after preparation because it becomes soft and loses its elasticity over time.
