World record holder and track queen Tobi Amusan has won her first gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the ongoing 2026 Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
Amusan clocked 12.83 seconds to win gold ahead of her rivals and clinch the title in the event’s final held on Wednesday, May 13.
Amusan claimed Nigeria’s first gold medal, crossing the line ahead of Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller, while another Nigerian, Adaobi Tabugbo, finished third to win her first individual medal for the country.
“Beyond grateful to God, my team, supporters, and everyone who continues to believe in me through every season. Historic feeling. Still hungry for more. The mission continues,” the athlete wrote on X after her victory.
This is her third gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the African championships. In 2018, she got her first African Championship title on home soil in Asaba, Delta State, and defended her crown four years later in Mauritius.
She did not compete in the hurdles at the last edition in Cameroon in 2024.
Speaking with journalists at the championships, Amusan urged young athletes not to be deterred by doubt or discouragement in pursuit of their ambitions.
“Don’t let anyone talk fear into your dreams. I remember when I started hurdling; I heard a lot of ‘Oh, nobody is going to do well as a hurdler from Africa.’ And guess who is the world record holder: me,” she said.
