Recipe: How To Prepare The South African Delicacy, Chakalaka

Chakalaka Recipe

Africans are known for delicious food recipes, and one of such recipe is Chakalaka, a popular South African delicacy. It is a spicy staple vegetable dish usually made from beans, tomatoes, peppers, and onions.

It is often served as a side dish to starchy foods like pap (corn porridge), bread, or rice.

Here is a recipe for how to make chakalaka.

Ingredients

  • 4 Carrots, peeled, tailed, and shredded
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper
  • 1 Sweet Onion (White Onion)
  • 1 tsp Ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp Garlic, grated
  • 1 tsp Tomato Puree
  • 1/2 Cup Tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 Cup Baked Beans
  • 1/4 tsp Cameroon Pepper
  • 2 tbsp Curry Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 tbs Vegetable Oil

Preparation

1. Cut peppers, onions & tomatoes into little cubes; peel and grate carrots; and grate/chop garlic and ginger into bite-sized pieces.

2. In a pan, heat vegetable oil, add onion, and allow to sauté, add garlic and ginger and stir for 2 minutes.

3. Add curry, green and red peppers, and fry for 2 more minutes.

4. Add carrots and fry for another minute

5. Add chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, salt, Cameroon pepper, and stir.

6. Allow cooking for 3 minutes while stirring frequently.

7. Add baked beans, and combine.

8. Leave it on the cooker for a minute or two before turning it off.
