Learn How To Make Keke Fieye (Traditional Ijaw Food) In Less Than 15 Minutes


If you’re looking to try healthier meals in 2019 Keke Fieye should be top on your list. This Nigerian delicacy made from unripe plantain and beans is a native food of the Ijaw people of Niger Delta. Unripe plantains are a rich source of fiber, vitamins A, C, and B-6, magnesium, and potassium.

The main ingredient in the meal is the unripe plantain which contains iron, a nutrient suitable for the body. The preparation process for Keke fieye is a little bit similar to the preparation of porridge plantain, you would think it is porridge plantain if the snail is taken away.

Ingredients

1.8 – 10 Unripe Plantains

2.Ground Crayfish

3.Red pepper/ground pepper

4.Seasoning


5.1 cooking spoon Palm oil

6.Ground Uziza Seeds (Teaspoon)

7.Dried Fish

8.Unshelled Snails

9.Salt

10.Scent Leaves (a handful)

11.Beans (a cup or more)

Directions

  1. Peel off the green back of the unripe plantain and slice to tiny bits
  2. Wash and slice in cubes or as desired
  3. Shred scent leave, clean the snail and bring to a boil for 5 minutes then set aside.
  4. Wash the dry fish with salt and leave to soak in hot water for 5-8minutes to remove the sand.
  5. Pour the water in a pot and boil.
  6. Peel plantain, wash and slice in cubes or as desired.
  7. Pour the sliced plantain into the boiling water and cook for about 10 minutes.
  8. Add the scent leaves, onions, Maggi, pepper, crayfish, dry fish and snail without stirring and cook for 10minutes or until the plantain is soft.
  9. Add the palm oil, stir then simmer under low heat for 5 minutes.
  10. Remove from heat and serve hot.
  11. If you are cooking keke fieye with beans you would need to start cooking with the beans, you cook until the beans are 80 percent before adding the plantain and then crayfish, dried fish
