Want to start a Youtube channel to make money, then you are in the right place.
Youtube, a video-sharing platform owned by Google is the world’s second most visited site.
Founded in 2005, YouTuber creators fondly called ‘YouTubers’ have risen to celebrity status both in Nigeria and the world over.
Dimma Umeh, Zeelicious, and Sisi Yemmie are examples of Nigerian YouTubers who have made a living by creating videos on YouTube.
These creators typically make money off YouTube through Google’s advertising network, AdSense, brand integrations in videos and sponsored videos, or affiliate marketing.
Some creators use all of these means to generate revenue while others depend solely on AdSense.
There has been a rise in YouTube channels in recent months especially with the COVID-19 pandemic which has left people seeking side hustles and other ways to make money.
If you are thinking of starting one, there is no better time than this.
Here is a guide on how to get started and make money.
1. Create your channel
The first step is to create your profile which will serve as your YouTube channel just like your other social media profiles. You must also have a Google account before you proceed.
Log in to YouTube.com and sign in with your Google account and password.
Go to settings, click on the link beside your profile icon.
At this point, you are asked to create a channel if you don’t have one already.
Check the details (with your Google Account name and photo) and confirm to create your channel.
2. Have a niche
Before you start, make sure you choose a niche you are comfortable and good at.
What is your passion? What is that thing you can do effortlessly? This can help inform your content path for your Youtube. Just because A is good at make-up and has lots of subscribers, doesn’t mean you should toe that line.
Look inwardly and do proper research before you choose a niche.
Also, consider using a name that stands out. If you don’t want to use your real name, make sure the name you choose is catchy.
3. Get the right tools and equipment
One of the important requirements of a successful YouTube channel is good video and audio quality.
For making videos, you will be needing tools like a camera, tripod, microphone, ring light, etc.
Even if you can’t afford an expensive camera just yet, try to invest in a phone with a good camera.
Also, you need to learn how to use video editing software for a start as you would be editing lots of videos.
4. Be creative and original
YouTube is about bringing your A-game and creativity to the table. Remember, you are joining at a time when there are a million and one channels already doing something similar to what you are doing.
This is where originality and creativity come in as this is what stands you out from the next YouTuber. As a beginner, try as much as possible to avoid lengthy videos, instead go straight to the point.
You can also get tips from other YouTubers in your niche by watching their videos ad observing them which can help you a great deal.
5. Use the right keywords
Like blogging, you need to optimize your videos to become search engine friendly. Do keyword research for your niche with keyword tools to make your videos rank high on YouTube.
This would also help you discover the best titles and descriptions for your videos.
6. Build and promote your audience
As a newbie, one of the ways to get views on your videos is by word of mouth. Tell your family and friends about your channel, and urge them to watch your videos and subscribe to your channel.
Also, promote your videos on your other social media platforms and tell your subscribers to share on their platforms too.
Without views, your channel won’t grow and this may leave you frustrated.
7. Monetize your Videos
The main reason why you started a YouTube channel is to make money right, therefore Youtube will need to place ads on your videos for that to happen. However, it is not as easy as it seems.
To make money on Youtube now, you need to have 1000 subscribers. Your channel also needs to have 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months.
Here is how to get started on monetizing your channel.
In the top right, select your account icon > Creator Studio.
In the left menu, select Channel > Status and features.
Under “Monetization,” click Enable.
Follow the on-screen steps to accept the YouTube Partner Program Terms.
8. Track your performance
Tracking how your videos perform is as important as making the videos. To do this, click the Analytics option in your Channel menu and see your estimated earnings, video views, ad performance, demographics.
