7 Essential Makeup Brushes You Need And How To Use Them

A good collection of brushes is a must-have for every makeup enthusiast. Brushes not only make applying makeup quick and easy, but they also help the product go on smoothly and evenly, creating a more flawless finish. If you’re just getting into makeup, a good set of brushes makes the process much easier.

There are several different types of makeup brushes, so it’s important to know which ones to use in your makeup routine. Here is a selection of important makeup brushes to add to your collection and how you can use them.

1. Foundation Brush

Your makeup routine should start off with an even base of the foundation. It can be difficult to apply a liquid foundation correctly without the proper brush.

When to use it: To apply liquid or cream foundation.

How to use it: In small, circular buffing motions. Always start at the centre of your face and blend outward.

2. Powder Brush

After applying your base, you may opt to set everything with a layer of loose powder. This powder will help your makeup stay in place throughout the day and give you an even more flawless look.

When to use it: To apply loose powder.

How to use it: Dip the brush in powder and tap off any excess before lightly sweeping it evenly across your forehead, nose and chin to set your makeup.

3. Angled Contour Brush

Contouring is one thing that can not be done without a brush.  A contour brush will have firmer bristles than a blush brush and a more angled tip. It is specially designed to help you target the areas that you want to contour and shape.

When to use it: To apply powder or cream bronzer.

How to use it: Suck your cheeks in and place the angled tip of the brush head right under your cheekbones so that it’s pointing downwards before sweeping it up toward your ears.

4. Fan Brush

The bristles in a fan brush are specifically designed for highlighters. The bristles are spread out so that the brush picks up a small amount of the product.

When to use it: To apply powder highlighter or to clean up any stray flecks of makeup.

How to use it: Lightly sweep the brush across the tops of your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose, as well as, wherever you need to brush off any fallout from your other products.

5. Blush Brush

If you’re using a powder blush, it’s absolutely crucial to use a brush to get a gorgeous natural look when applying it. If you don’t use the correct brush when applying this type of product, the result can look very cakey and unnatural.

When to use it: To apply powder blush

How to use it: In short, sweeping motions. Start at the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards toward your ears.

6. Concealer Brush

After you apply foundation, you can use concealer to cover any imperfections and brighten up dull areas on the face. For the most precise concealer application, you’ll want to use a small concealer brush.

When to use it: To apply (and diffuse) liquid or cream concealer.

How to use it: Load the bristles with the product and tap it over any areas that need extra coverage (like under the eyes, around your nose or over blemishes).

7. Lip Brush

Most of the times, we either use the doe brush that comes with the lip products or applies them directly. However, if you want precision and perfectly lined lips like you see in makeup tutorials and photo shoots, a lip brush is a must.

When to use it: To line and fill your lips with colour.

How to use it: Sweep the brush over the tip of your lipstick and sketch along with your natural lip line. Reload the brush and carefully fill in the rest to finish.
