7 Things Nigerian Hollywood Star, Yvonne Orji Revealed In Her Chat With The New York Times


Nigerian-American actress, Yvonne Orji is popular for her role in the hit TV series,’Insecure’ where she played a hot-shot lawyer with a messy love-life.

What many don’t know about the talented actress who hails from Port-Harcourt in Rivers State, is the struggles she had to  overcome before hitting it big in Hollywood.

Recounting a period when she didn’t have $6 dollars to afford a slice of pizza and a drink, one can hardly believe how far she has come now as she is touring with big names like Chris Rock.

Here are 7 Things we learnt from her chat with New York Times

1. Yvonne Orji has a Masters degree in Public health.

After obtaining a Masters degree in public health from the George Washington University in 2008, the following year, she had a stint in Liberia fighting teen pregnancy and HIV for a global health organization.


2. Her parents wanted her to be a doctor.

Yvonne imitated her fathers response to knowing  she was serving in Liberia,  “‘So you’re wearing all white to serve people? You could be wearing all white to be a doctor.’”

3. Yvonne did odd jobs to pay for acting classes

She saved up enough money from her restaurant job as a waitress  to pay for an acting class in New York.

4. She once lived in the basement of an acquaintance because she couldn’t pay rent.

“The only person I knew in New York was this woman I had met in Liberia,” Ms. Orji said. She called her from the road. “She was like, ‘Oh, where are you staying?’ ‘Funny you should ask. I don’t know, but I’ve got two hours to figure it out.’” The good Samaritan offered Ms. Orji the basement of her apartment in Queens, free.

5. Yvonne plans to stay a virgin till she is married

Even its no longer news that the actress is practicing celibacy, she revealed that her parents her presently asking her to give them grandchildren and her mother has gone as far as giving her number to prospective suitors.

6. She is not in a relationship because of her career

Yvonne recalled her last relationship, which she ended several years ago because she wanted to focus more on her career. “To not have the wherewithal to give fully to a relationship bothered me,” she said. “His birthday would come around and I would say, ‘I made you a card. I hope you like it. It has macaroni on it. I went to Trader Joe’s, that’s dinner.’”

7. Yvonne believes in doing more

“I want to do more good work. That’s very much my parents’ influence in me.” “There’s just still so much to do,” she said. “It’s super-dope, but I don’t think I’ve even scratched the surface.”
